MOHAMMED ALI JINNAH ..........women in his life

Mohammed Ali Jinnah is perhaps one of the greatest Muslim leaders of the 20 th century.

In the words of John Biggs-Davison, " Although without Ghandi, Hindustan would still have gained independence and without Lenin and Mao, Russia and China would still have endured Communist revolution, without Jinnah there would have been no Pakistan in 1947."
Mohammed Ali Jinnah ........leader was intelligent and determined , many articles and many books have been written about this great leader . I would like to discuss the role of few women in his life who did somewhat define this extraordinary man.
His parents Jinnah Bhai Ponja and Mithibai were of Kutchi Gujrati origin who moved to Karachi in 1875 , he was born a year later in 1876. They belong to a family of weavers , at that time Karachi was enjoying an economic boom which helped Jinnah" s family establish their business. His mom encouraged him to read books . He was one of the brightest student at Karachi" s Sindh Madrasa tul Islam. Jinnah was sent to England at a young age of 16 for higher studies .He married a lady named Emirbai who was two years younger than him before he left for London. Jinnah's mother and young bride died of Cholera while he was studying law at Lincoln's Inn , London.
Rattanbai Petit or "Ruttie" as she was affectionately called was a bright and very talented young girl. She was 16 when she met Jinnah who was her father Sir Dinshaw Petit's friend. She was a lady with diverse interests . Ruttie was interested in poetry and fiction on one hand ,while on the other hand she was very much interested in politics. It is believed that the first meeting between the two took place in Darjeeling. Jinnah asked her father for her hand in marriage when she was 16 years old .Sir Dinshaw Petit was extremly angry at this proposal and forbade Ruttie to meet Jinnah, as she was a minor at that time. She converted to Islam shortly after her eighteenth birthday and married Jinnah. The wedding ceremony was attended by very few friends ,the couple went to Nainital for their honeymoon. The early years of their marraige could not have been happier. The two made a "head turning couple".........Ruttie was like a beautiful flower. Jinnah was tall and dashing who was always dressed in fine tailored suits. They both enjoyed the theatre in Bombay. She was a revolutionary like her husband , she was with him when he led a demonstration against Lord Willingdon , the Governor of Bombay. In 1919 their daughter Dina was born. By the mid 1922 Jinnah was facing political problems he spent long hours at his office and also campaigning for various issues. Ruttie  packed her bags and left for London with her daughter. She did deeply cared for her husband but could not tolerate the late hours.
Jinnah was appointed to a subcommittee to establish a military academy like Sandhurst in India for which he had to travel to Europe and North America, he took Ruttie with her. Even the trip overseas could help the couple to resolve their differences. Ruttie separated from him in 1927. She withdrew into a world of mysticism. She kept in touch with only few close friends and few pets . She got sick and stayed in the Taj Hotel in Bombay . She wrote many letters to Jinnah in which she expressed her love for him. She finally died in 1929 on the day of her 29th birthday , she was buried according to Muslim traditions. Jinnah sat quietly during her funeral , he was an extremly private man who never showed his emotions in public but that day he cried openly. Letters written by Ruttie to Jinnah have been made public but the letters written by Jinnah were never made public. It is believed that he tried his best to care of her but she wanted to live alone in the last few years of her life. Jinnah went to Ruttie's grave before leaving for Pakistan in 1947 , he cried openly there. Jinnah's assistant said he  cried only on two occasion in his life and both times for Ruttie :once at her funeral and other at her grave.
Dina Jinnah was his only child , Jinnah and his sister took care of her after her mother's death . She was a pampered daughter who was raised as a Muslim by Jinnah. She was away at school came home during vacations .
Dina Jinnah wanted to marry a Parsi named Neville Wadia who succeeded  his father as the chairman of Bombay Dyeing one of India's largest textile companies. According to Jinnah's assistant Mr Chagla;  Jinnah in his usual imperious manner , told her that there were millions of Muslim boys in India  and she could have anyone she chose."Father there were millions of Muslim girls in India .Why did you not marry one of them?"..........he replaid "she became a Muslim".
Ironically Jinnah and Dina Jinnah's  father-daughter relationship became extremely formal after her marriage to Mr Wadia , somewhat like that of her mother Ruttie and her grandfather . He started addressing her as Mrs Wadia. She lived in Bombay had two children,it is believed that Jinnah visited his grandson and granddaughter once in Bombay. Dina Jinnah did not move to Pakistan the country created by her father .She came to Karachi in 1948 to attend his funeral. Her son Ness Wadia became the the chairman of Bombay Dyeing after her husband's death . It is also ironic that all  families ; Jinnah's , Dinshaw Pettit's and Neville Wadia 's are associated with textile business. Mrs Wadia visited  Pakistan in 2004 with her son and grandsons to watch a cricket match between India and Pakistan in the spirit of "Cricket Diplomacy" to improve relations between the two countries . She was given an official protocol by the government of Pakistan when she visited Jinnah's tomb in Karachi. ''"It is a very sad and wonderful for me. May his dream of Pakistan come true", she wrote in the visitors book.
Fatima Jinnah was Jinnah's youngest sister , she studied dentistry in Calcutta. Fatima Jinnah closed her clinic after Ruttie's death and moved in with Mr Jinnah to help him take care of the house and his daughter. She was  one of the founding and most influential members of the Pakistan Movement . She along with Mrs Rana Liaquat Ali Khan formed APWA in 1947 . She took care of her brother till the day he died. Ms Jinnah lost the 1965 elections to Ayub Khan and died in 1967 but the nation never forgot her undying support to their "Quaid" she was given the title of "Madre e Millat"(mother of the nation). Fatima Jinnah Medical College for women was established in Lahore and later on Fatima Jinnah Dental College was established in Karachi to honor Ms Jinnah.
Mohammed Ali Jinnah was a non-interfering and and an unimposing man who never confided his sister to stay home or never forced his wife and daughter to stay with him to gain political benefits. He respected and loved all four women in his life . People say he  loved "Pakistan" more than anything or anyone..............may his dream for Pakistan come true !

TWO SIDES OF THE STORY .........MY SIDE AND YOUR SIDE

Today I would like to share a true story with everyone........... A doctor/ surgeon came running to the operation theatre at the door he was met by the extremely upset, kind of angry father of the patient . "Doc you took such a long time to get here , what if something happened to my son ", said the father . " Sir I had to deal with something very important , I came as fast as I could " replied the doctor . He went in and did the 5 hr surgery . He was eventually able to save the life of the young guy. After the surgery he came out and said to the father " your son" s life is out of danger ; the surgery went very well! Now I have to go , the nurse will give you further details " . He left and the nurse came in the father was very happy for his son yet very angry at the doctor ; he complained to the nurse about the " attitude " of the doctor . " He is one of our finest surgeons , he was off today just came for your son" s surgery ; regarding the attitude his son died two days back he and his family is extremely disturbed " replied the nurse . The father started to cry after listening to the nurse" s reply . " Oh my God what have I done , why was I so rude to the poor guy, why ? why ?"
The motto of the story " there are always two sides to the story , never be judgmental , don't react immediately give the benefit of doubt to others ; most of the time we don't know what the other person is thinking"!!

WEDDING IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Grover Cleveland was an immensely private person who was a bachelor when he became the President. He was secretly in love with Frances Folsom, who was daughter of his old law partner in New York.Frances Folsom's mother was aware of the romantic relationship .President Cleveland was able to surprise the country when he announced his wedding details just one week before the ceremony. This small wedding ceremony was held in the Blue Room of the White House on june 2nd 1886.At the time of wedding Ms Folsom was 21years old (making her the youngest first lady)and the President was 49 years old.It was the first marriage ceremony of a US President held in the White House.
The press recorded every activity of the newly married couple, it was speculated that the marriage will be a rocky one due to the 27 year age difference between the husband and wife.It was also thought that the First Lady and President's relationship will be strained due to his political responsibilities. Yet history shows that the public's speculations were wrong and the Clevelands enjoyed a very happy married life, they had 5 children.
Mrs Cleveland took over the duties   of being White House hostess and her charm won her great popularity. She met with women of the country every saturday afternoons. She was very much admired by the public and young women copied her hairstyle. She helped African American women establish "The Washington Home for Friendless Colored Girls " after she saw two homeless women eating out of garbage cans.

PATH OF NOBILITY ............CONCEPT OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

Words said by  Martin Luther King still have a great impact on people , even after so many years. He is perhaps one of the best orators in the world .His message was and  is that of peace, equality and respect of our fellow men.

I Like this quote I dislike this quote

“Whatever career you may choose for yourself - doctor, lawyer, teacher - let me propose an avocation to be pursued along with it.
Become a dedicated fighter for civil rights.
Make it a central part of your life. It will make you a better doctor, a better lawyer, a better teacher.
It will enrich your spirit as nothing else possibly can. It will give you that rare sense of nobility that can only spring from love and selflessly helping your fellow man.
Make a career of humanity.
Commit yourself to the noble struggle for human rights.
You will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country and a finer world to live in.”

LAST CAMPAIGN OF THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT

No matter who wins or who looses tonight this is the last campaign of President Obama. He gave his last campaign speech in Iowa yesterday night. He had tears in his eyes when he said "this is where it all started" . Iowa was the state in 2008 which gave victory to then Senator Obama over Senator Clinton in the Democratic Primaries. Iowa is a small state with few electrolyte college votes up for grabs but it has always been considered to be a " battle ground state".
President Obama did what never was done before he became the first African American person to be elected the President of the United States. He was the one who broke the glass ceiling by becoming the first African American President.
His opponents are not happy with him and his supporters say maybe 4 years were not enough to fix e every thing ! Well Ohio and Virginia are two of the few " battle ground states" where both candidates have spent a lot of time and money.

THE CAMEL CART GUY AND THE PRESIDENT

I don't know if many  people know about the unusual friendship of a poor camel cart driver from Karachi,Pakistan and the President of United States Lyndon B Johnson. It all started in the early 1960s when during an official visit to Pakistan then Vice President Lyndon Johnson saw a man standing on the street in Karachi with his camel , waving at the vice-presidential motorcade . Vice President Johnson asked the Pakistani government officials to introduce him to the " camel guy". The camel cart driver whose name was Bashir Sarban was extremely excited to shake hands with the Vice President . He introduced himself in what little English he knew. Mr Johnson invited him to his ranch in Texas and to the White House.
Few months later as the guest of United States government Bashir Sarban flew to Washington DC . He was beaming with happiness at the airport. He was recieved as the official guest of US government and Mr Johnson himself was present at the airport to recieve him. He was given a tour of the White House, Capitol Hill and other monuments. Later he went to the Johnson Ranch in Texas where he enjoyed a ride in the Vice President Johnson" s truck . He also enjoyed a barbecue lunch. He visited and gave a short speech at a local school in Wasington through an interpreter, along with Mrs Johnson and her daughter .Mr Sarban was presented a Ford Truck by the Ford Motor Company as a gift.
On the day of his return to Pakistan Mr Sarban recieved a telegram from the US government that they have arranged for him to visit Saudi Arabia to perform " Umrah" in the Holy city of Mecca. " Allah o Akbar" .....God is great we're the words of the poor camel cart driver who had tears in his eyes and who was amazed at the hospitality of the US government and people.
Both President Johnson and Mr Sarban are not alive any more but to this day people in Pakistan and in Washington DC talk about this unique friendship !

DEBATE AMONG THE # 2'S

The first USVice-Presidential debate was held in 1976 between Walter Mondale and Bob Dole.Vice Presidential candidates are more relaxed than the Presidential nominees during their debates. It was Lloyd Bernstein who rather scolded the younger Dan Quayle by telling him "I knew Jack Kennedy , he was a friend of mine , you are no Jack Kennedy".Dick Cheney and Joe Liberman were quite friendly  during their debate in 2000. People were highly excited to watch Sarah Palin vs Joe Biden in 2008 mostly because of Ms Palin's sudden rise to stardom. Well Biden somewhat won the debate.
Today's debate will be between the cool, exercise buff........congressman Paul Ryan vs the folksy,America's favorite grandfather............... Vice President Joe Biden. All the best guys !

Analyzing the movie " English Vinglish"

English Vinglish is a new Indian movie released this month starring Sri Devi. It can be little comical, little sarcastic , at times . After leaving the theatre it gives the audience a strong reason to think about what is right and what is wrong ?
English Vinglish is the story of a mom and a wife who is an excellent cook especially makes very delicious " laddoos" ( Indian dessert) . She takes care of her family but is not properly respected by her husband and daughter because her English speaking skills are quite bad!
She learns English by enrolling in a crash course , while visiting her niece.
It gives her new self confidence . The motto behind it is : if you work hard and if you are determined you can achieve anything and everything.......Yes 100% true but the question what comes in my mind Why do we people who belong to the " Sub - Continent Mentality" give so much respect to those people who can speak English Language, why ? It is good to master another language besides your own : Hindi or Urdu .......but do you think people who can speak English are better human beings than the rest of us ? No there are many people who cannot speak English but are excellent human beings. Look around you most of our grandmothers were not fluent in English they joined the Independence Movement in 1940s , worked hard and raised their children to become extraordinary human beings.
I look at the chauffeur who works 20 hrs a day takes care of not only his but also his brother" s family he is a more decent man than his boss who wears expensive suits , speaks fluent English but is a very corrupt business man.I look at the domestic maid who works all day in people" s houses to support her kids, she is better than the lady who has hired her and who is busy in her fake/ superficial life which revolves around " showing off her wealth".
Just think for a few minutes and analyze....

T -20 CRICKET CARNIVAL..................

The British created the 'Empire of Cricket' in which they taught their subjects the game of Cricket so they can be well connected with their subjects through this game.Even though most of the countries once under British rule are free independent nations now , people in all these countries still enjoy playing cricket from street corners to playgrounds. It all started with five-day cricket matches or more commanly termed as the Gentleman's Game ; cricketers wore long white pants and white long sleeved shirts. They had lunch breaks and tea breaks and also rest days. The game was played from morning to evening. It transformed into a One-day games during the 1960s.One day Cricket was also introduced in England where county teams played for the Gillette Cup in 1963. It was the Australian business tycoon Kerry Packer who introduced day/ night limited over games which were played under hundreds of bright  light bulbs  in the evening ,it was called World Series of Cricket . Fifty or sixty over a side cricket matches were played by each team with a lunch break in between.West Indies won the first two One Day Cricket World Cups held in England. These One Day International Cricket World Cup is  held after every 4 years in different cricket playing countries.
The phenomen of  T 20 tournament started in England in 2003 . It was a shorter version of the game where each team played 20 overs. The T20 Cricket World Cup is played every year , this new format was a huge success in the cricket world .Mostly all of the cricket playing nation organizes a national tournament where local teams compete against each other. The Indian premier league is the most famous  league which offers high paying salaries to players .These  leagues are mostly funded by Bollywood movie stars and Indian business personalities.
As Kerry Packer introduced the game under power lights at night with a white ball and colorful uniforms , the T 20 Cricket Series introduced players sitting on benches and the tie breaking final over in case of a tie. This T 20 Cricket format has totally changed the once long game into a short 3 hour media and sports extravaganza enjoyed by young and old.The first T20 Cricket World Cup was won by India in 2007 in South Africa. The T 20 Cricket Competition is considered more explosive and competitive in nature. There are 17 countries  playing T 20 Cricket tournament.

RUMI .............greatest poet of the soul

You were born with wings then why do you prefer to crawl in life
                        ~ Rumi

Jalaluddin Rumi was born in the 13th century in the Persian Empire but later on setteled in the city of Konya,Turkey.Rumi's life story is full of intrigue,he was a great sufi poet and a brilliant scholar. His work has been translated in many languages and these days he is regarded as the most widely read poet in America. He is very popular all over the world .........in every part .He is often compared to Shakespeare and  Mozart for his creative talents.
Rumi was a good friend of a scholar named Shams.Rumi was greatly heart broken after the death of Shams , he expressed his grief in the form of poetry in two epic books "Divan -e- Shams Tabrizi" and "Massanvi ". Rumi does not only talk about  only one culture or one religion but about humanity. His world is the world of a Sufi whose goal is to care for everyone ,to advice everyone ..........he does not offend anyone but include everyone............

Yesterday I was clever , so I wanted to change the world ,Today I am wise so I am changing myself

His work offers solutions to many complicated problems in religion and ethics.

a community comes together,a city comes together .......for a "Hero"

It was last Sunday Night when a police officer was getting ready to go back home late at night,he recieved a 911 from a person who heard gun shots in his neighbourhood. The officer and his team ran to the shooting sight. The gun shots were coming from inside a house ......from the upstairs bedroom........maybe the person who is firing the gun shots, wants to commit suicide. The police team broke the front door and let the officer inside. He started calling the shooters name and entered the house ,suddenly few gun shots came from the upstairs bedroom and the officer was shot very badly........he died later in the hospital. The stand-off between the police and the shooter continued for over 20 hrs and at the end the shooter killed himself. All the people living in the neighbourhood were evacuated from the houses.............they were told to go back home, slowly the police cars started to leave the scene,TV reporters, newspaper crews everyone started to leave but everyone was sad, tearful for what had happened ! A good man,a police officer who was a loving husband and father was killed in the line of duty ............so sad.
No one can bring back the officer but the community thought we can help his wife and his four kids ,the local ice cream parlours helped ,radio shows helped by sending volunteers to all major traffic signals to collect money for the fallen hero, local banks helped by starting a college funds for the officers family, city's police station helped by starting collecting money from few cents to thousands of dollars for their fallen hero.Within few days the city collected over $80,000 for the police officer.Every one pitched in Catholics and Jewish people,Muslims and Hindus,Mormons and Sikhs, rich and poor, young and old.The officer can not be replaced but atleast his wife will have to worry a little less ...............

(inspired by the true story of Officer O'Rouke who was killed in the city of West Bloomfield , last week)

7 Queens of Sindh

Even after so many years people still enjoy reading about the tales of the 7 queens of Sindh, which are set in 1600s in the province of Sindh in Southeast Asia. These were all strong women of great abilities and good character, they were greatly admired by their lovers.Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai a local Sindhi Sufi Saint writes about them in his book 'Shah jo Risalo'. The 7 stories were about the 7 queens and their lovers ;Momal Rano,Umar Marvi,Sohni Mehar,Laila Chancer,Noori Jam Tamachi,Sassi Pannu and Sorah Rai Diyach. These women belong to local villages ,fishing tribes and towns .........all of them have been painted as women of great character and intellect.Even though most of the stories have a tragic ending but all of these women were greatly loved and admired by their families, friends and their lovers.Shah Bhittai is called the 'Rumi' of Sindh he has always called these ladies 'Queens' ............how poor village ladies can reach the status of a queen by portraying positive qualities of ........honesty,loyalty and bravery.

GOVERNOR ROMNEY"S PROBLEMS AT HOME

Few days back during the Republican Convention the Republican nominee Mitt Romney talked about growing up in Detroit and his dad being the governor of the great state of Michigan.Willard Mitt Romney was born at Harper Hospital Detroit and grew up in the prestigious Bloomfield Hills suburb of Detroit. He met his wife Anne at Cranbrook School , Bloomfield Hills. His dad was a popular governor , his family still owns a house in Bloomfield Hills but the question is will he be able to win Michigan in the presidential elections. All polls show him trailing Barack Obama , there are few factors for that : his confused stance on the economic bail out of the automobile companies in Michigan and him settling in Massachusetts . Mr Romney also served as the governor of Massachusetts . The common point of view in Michigan is that he is talking about Michigan to win the states electrol college votes. An independent grocery store owner in the city of Bloomfield Hills said "how can I vote for someone who was not in favour of saving my friend" s job at General Motors, no way my guy is Obama". Another teacher at Cranbrook said "I remember his dad great guy would have voted for him but not Mitt, he left Michigan , he did not settle in our state" .
The Romney camp also faced problems in Michigan during the primaries against Rick Santorum, that race was very close and Governor Romney won the state after a tough battle. The voters in the Great Lakes State are confused if he can be trusted with their economic problems or should they stick with President Obama who has already rescued their auto industry once !!!

THE BRONTE SISTERS

Being a student of English Literature I have always been impressed by the writings of the Bronte Sisters ........Emily , Anne and Charlotte Bronte. They lived with thir father, brother and aunt at Howarth near Yorkshire,England. All three of them died at a young age and remained ill all throughout their lives, yet they were able to write few beautiful books of English Literature.Their mom and two older sisters died at a young age, their dad Patrick Bronte was a priest who was not very involved with their lives.Their aunt Elizabeth Barnwell raised them. All of them attended local girls boarding school in Yorkshire.Their brother Barnwell was an artist. The Bronte sisters played on the hills and trees and had imaginary friends.Their books reflect either their own life stories or of the imaginary friends they had.
Charlotte Bronte wrote 'Jane Eyre' a beautiful book about a shy girl ,it is sort of her own autobiography.'Wuthering Heights' is the only book written by Emily Bronte which is the story of a rich girl and a villager Heathcliff.Anne Bronte's book 'Agnes Grey' is about a lady who took care of others.
These three sisters led a very quite life, they were mostly self taught but they have written some of the great books of English Literature.

FROM BIRYANI KHOKA ,KARACHI TO BIRYANI CART,NY

I still remember eating the most delicious Biryani at a Students Biryani Khoka in Bohri Bazar,Karachi.Khoka is like a small cart where Biryani cooked in a huge iron pot or 'degh'is served and people stand or sit around the cart to eat it.It started as a small business which extpanded all over the country and even outside Pakistan.Birayni is a chicken and rice dish with tomatoes, spices and potatoes. It is one of the most popular dishes in Pakistani Cuisine.
When I read about the Biryani Cart in NY near 6th ave and 46th street,I got very excited that my favorite dish Biryani has made its journey to United States and it is sold out of a Biryani Cart. This Biryani Cart was started by a Bangladeshi American. Chicken,Goat and Vegetable Biryani is served here along with yogurt and chutney.Kati Rolls and Tandoori Chicken is also sold at the NY Biryani Cart.It is quite popular around town and was also nominated for the "Vendy Award"!

DIVERSITY CUP.............BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER THROUGH THE GAME OF CRICKET

DIVERSITY CUP is a cricket tournament put together by a cricket fan and his group of friends in the state of Michigan. His goal is to promote the game of cricket in North America and to bring people from different nationalities together under one banner..........the banner of Diversity Cup.Cricket is not a popular sport in USA as baseball or basketball but the immigrants from many cricket playing countries introduced this the second most popular sports in the world to the people of United States.
One such individual is Mr Shahid Ahmed an engineer from Troy ,MI.He had played cricket for his college and university in Karachi Pakistan. After he migrated to USA in 1999 he brought his cricket bat and ball with him.He has been associated with Michigan Cricket Association since 2001 when it was formed and it was in the year 2006 the first Diversity Cup was played in Rochester Hills ,MI comprising of 6 teams. The number of teams which played this year in Diversity Cup 2012 went up to 8.These teams were India Blues,Pakistan Greens,World 11 Dare Devils,Bangladesh Tigers,Srilanka Lions,West Indies Masters,Canada Maple Leaves and USA Stars. This two day event is greatly appreciated by players representing their respective countries but also by cricket fans who come to watch this spectacular tournament from different parts of United States and Canada.Global Sports is the company which organizes this tournament along with a long list of sponsors and volunteers.
Mr Ahmed has been promoting this tournament for a long time and it is all due to his hard work that many international cricketers have graced the cricket pitch at the Diversity Cup by playing for their respective countries like Mohammed Azharuddin of India,Shoaib Mohammed of Pakistan,Rangana Herath from Sri Lanka and Adam Sanford feom West Indies .This year the cricket matches were broadcasted live on Jadoo TV and U-stream.Many other popular cricketer like Mr Javed Miandad,Mr Asif Iqbal and Mr Mushtaq Mohammed have also attended the Diversity Cup as guests.
Mr Ahmed 's dream is that one day English and Australian teams are also part of the Diversity Cup and the sport of Cricket is played all across the United States. It looks imminent that one day his dream will become a reality.
Cricket is a unique game where players not only compete but they also abide by the spirit of the game,it was first introduced by the British. The game of cricket is very detailed; a five day test match is played for 5 full days.In recent years a 20/20 over format has been introduced which has gained attention of media and public. The World Cup Cricket and T-20 tournaments were bradcasted on cable news and dish TV all over the world and also in USA through which people have developed a keen interest in watching and understanding this game.

INVINCIBLE SPAIN

Last night Spain won the Euro 2012 .... European Soccer Championship for the second time in a row! This is Spain" s third soccer championship and it has proved to the world that they are the invincible soccer champions of the world.
Spain performed very well in the tournament thrashing the Italian Team 4-0!
The people of Spain were out on streets after the victory cheering and dancing in the streets. As most of the people know Spain is going through an economic crisis the unemployment rate in the country is almost 52% which is the highest in Europe. It is expected that like the French Economic Turnout after the soccer national team"s victory in 2008 , Spain" s economy will also change dramatically!
If a country can put together a dedicated soccer team then they can also turn around the economy!

SOAP OPERA EXTINCTION

Soap Operas are dramas first produced by radio and later television which takes us into the high profile lives of some made for television families.Their love lives and business ventures, social issues and political rivalries. The main audience was female for these soap operas as they were first aired on radio in 1930s,the story line created was more appealing towards women listeners. These shows took the name 'Soap Opera' because the were sponsored by soaps and shampoo making companies like Procter and Gamble ,Lever Brothers, etc. These shows were set in exclusive mansions ,characters were high profile socialists and the story always ends at a cliff-hanger.People go away to far offplaces and come back, patients wake up after years in coma, love triangles and social circles are fun to watch.Sometimes these soap operas remind us of Sheherzad's "tale of 100 nights".These stories have been going on and on for a very long time and some over 30 years. They were all aired during day time, attracting stay home ladies.
It all started in 1930s when the very first soap opera was aired on radio. It was in 1950s that Soap Operas were broadcasted on Television. As the World Turns and General Hospital were the two initial soap operas followed by Guiding Light ,One life to Live ,Young and the Restless and the most recent Bold and the Beautiful which is set up in the fashion district of California. The stories have drama, suspense ,twists and turns .......even the dead become alive after some change of events.
After almost 55 years, now the viewership of soap operas has declined greatly mostly due to the huge popularity of talk shows, evening sitcoms and reality shows.....or maybe due to the new fun box 'You Tube' where u can watch and upload all kind of funny, serious and at times crazy videos.
Now people and mostly ladies are working in and out f the house, they spend the free time in front of the computer rather than the TV.

Notebook of Alzheimer's

Notebook of Alzheimer's

The book and the movie Notebook is about a lady who had a beautiful life with her husband but who was suffering from Alzheimer's .She forgot everything about her past, her family....yet her husband stayed with her and took care of her , he read about the incidents of the past ....the beautiful past they both once shared !both the book and the movie were major blockbusters .....it touched our hearts how precious are our memories and the importance of love and companionship!
Well Notebook was a novel and later a movie but there is a real life story about a person suffering from Alzheimer's and his wife which has touched not only my heart but of too many people!
Sandra Day OCorner was the first lady appointed to US Supreme Court. She had a very successful career and a happy married life with her husband John. Her husband who was also an attorney moved to Washington DC with her and left his practice in NewYork.
Later on in his life he started showing signs of Alzheimer's , his wife took care of him while taking care of her busy career. After some time when his disease progressed she had to put him in an institution for Alzheimer's patients. She visited him every day but pretty soon he had no memory of her or their children. He made a new girl friend in the institution .. another patient who he talked to and hold hands with. Even then his wife never complained or stopped visiting him. Her point of view " I am happy that he is happy, I cherish all the memories I have of both of us and all the happy times we had together".
Mr John O Connor died few years back but his wife Sandra still talks about him, their three kids regard their mom as not only a great mother , a devoted wife but simply as a Hero for everyone!

MUM" s LIST

MUM" S LIST :A dying mother / wife" s list of life lessons for her husband and sons

Kate Greene and her husband John Greene were high school sweethearts.Their life was shattered when they found out that Kate had stage 3 breast cancer. She started telling her husband " small suggestions" or " life lessons" to write to pass on to her young sons after she is gone.
He published them in the form of a book a year after her death.
These " suggestions" or " tips" are simple yet inspirational like:
1. Teach the kids to say what they want.
2.kiss them at least twice a day
3. Take family vacations

She asked her husband to promise her that he would find someone and remarry after her death as " it's good to be with someone "!
She asked her husband to take the boys to vacation places she used to go so in a way her spirit would accompany them. She asked her kids to try cookies and jam as she loved it!

I am not a very emotional person but this book often brought tears in my eyes and I was at times laughing at the funny incidents.
It is kind of an eye opener as to appreciate life and the people around you before its too late .So in my humble opinion live, love, enjoy and appreciate!

Mothers Day ..... Why Not ?

MOTHERS DAY, FATHERS DAY ...... WHY NOT ??

Some one said to me Mothers Day is not a religious holiday so we should not celebrate it!
Mothers or Fathers Day should be celebrated every day !
My answer was yes I agree it is not religious holiday but it symbolizes love for the person who gave birth to you and who has and will always be there for you, I also agree that we should honor our parents every day and most of us do honor them always ..... Yet there is no harm in honoring that person a little more on a specific day !
Mothers Day and Fathers Day in my opinion are good traditions started to show your love and respect for the two people who are always looking out for you, who are always praying for your success and also who get worried for you the most!
They will always love u even with or without a gift or dinner party but is there any harm in some extra pampering ?

Immigrant Women in UNITED STATES

Many families from all over the world have migrated to the United States in search for a bright future. There have been many significant contributions made by immigrant women to this great country adding to our nation's uniqueness. The screen legend Audrey Hepburn was a British beauty who gained stardom by such films as Breakfast at Tiffanys and My Fair Lady .Fashion designer Liz Claiborne was born in Belgium and later moved to United States to start her own clothing/accessory line.Martina Navratilova the tennis champion immigrated from Czechoslovakia.Madeline Albright was the first woman and the first immigrant woman to become US secretary of State.Tressa Heinz Kerry took charge of the family business after the sudden death of her husband.Christiane Amounpour who is daughter of an Iranian executive,is a remarkable journalist.Daughter of Indian immigrants Nikki Haley was elected the first female governor of South Carolina.Huma Abedian the personal assistant to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is a Pakistani-American Immigrant.
I would also like to acknowledge two local women notably Raseeda Talib the first Muslim woman elected to the Michigan Legislature and Najjah Bazzy a nurse who started Zaman International a very large charitable organization.
I would like to highlight the achievements of these women but also of all the lawyers, teachers, physicians, engineers, small business owners and writers who have left a mark on this great nation,so much so that even the American culture has been forced to take notice.Films depicting immigrant culture have turned into box office hits like My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Spanglish and yes even The Godfather. The American Dynamics have been transformed by the immigrant culture, traditions and glitzy fashion statement. One can find Shaan masalas and Basmati rice in many grocery stores across the country. The Tandoori Revolution rocks .Bhangra and Salsa have been introduced in the American Culture.Immigrant Fashion Designers bring their uniqueness from every continen, they not only dress their ethnic groups but also Hollywood stars and our First Lady.
Maybe some day daughter of an immigrant will run for the highest office in the land.
